For safety, each team on the dog sled tour is assisted by an instructor on a snowmobile who has a satellite phone. The coldest month on Lake Baikal is January, Lake Baikal freezes only in the first half of January. The average daily temperature is about -15C though on some days it can fall as low as -30C. The ice roads over the lake open at the end of January when the ice is thick enough. Even though the ice is about 1m thick and can bear considerable loads, in some places its solid structure is destroyed by thermal spars so driving on the ice without an experienced guide is dangerous.
