Safety note: Safety is our main concern. Because of the scale and remoteness of our location in Kamchatka, and the extreme nature of the skiing experience, we place limits on the size of each tour group for heli-skiing: One group consists of a maximum of six skiers who are accompanied by both a local and an IFMGA Guide. Given the fact that two groups share one helicopter, there are always four skilled professionals present while skiing. Since we cannot rely on a Mountain rescue infrastructure, like in the Alps, we consider this measure necessary to ensure maximum safety and efficiency for our operation! Each guide carries all the necessary first aid equipment, as well as a radio link to other guides, the helicopter crew and the local mountain rescue team. Weather and snow condition: The daytime winter temperature in Kamchatka can go down to -20° C and there is also a possibility of strong wind and snow. In spring there should be powder in the shade and spring snow on the sunny slopes. Many slopes run straight down to the coast where shelf ice covers parts of the beaches. Helicopter: Our main mode of transport is the MI-8 helicopter, which is the most common model of helicopter in the world. The operational condition of our MI-8 helicopters is maintained under strict technical regulations and inspected on a regular basis. There are up to 20 seats in the MI-8 helicopter for passengers. The standard crew consists of two pilots and one mechanic. Our experienced pilots have demonstrated their expertise in the past with perfect drop-offs in strong winds and are always very sensitive to the conditions getting too rough. Our sturdy MI-8 helicopter will be reserved exclusively for our group. There are no restrictions in the choice of landing zones other than weather and snow conditions. We limit the number of passengers to 16 (12 participants plus 4 guide-instructors), which allows us to be more efficient and flexible in the mountain environment. Compared to the traditional heli-skiing providers in Canada and the US, who base their helicopter cost calculation on vertical meters, we prefer to base our calculation on the flight time. This method is not only more transparent, but also seems to be more suited to the fact that we have the freedom to react to the conditions and to explore the best volcanoes and runs. On a good day we will be flown 7,000 to 10,000 vertical meters at a cost of approx. 2.5 hours! Even if we are unlucky and experience many bad weather days we should be able to use all of the flight time included in the package. If we enjoy good weather and snow conditions, we might be able to use up to 100% of additional helicopter time! Once we have spent the included hours, we will pay the chopper on a per day basis (Ј115/hour/person). 1 day of free ride usually takes 2 to 3 hours of helicopter time. If we cannot use the pre-booked time, we will pay back Ј85/hour/person for the remaining unused hours.
