Tourists will see wisents in Vologda region

A new tourist route where is possible to see the most northern wild wisents in the world is going to be started in Vologda region.

According to the Department for the protection of wildlife in Vologda region, now there are about 4.2 thousand European wisents in the world, about 500 of them live on the territory of the Russian Federation. The first three wisents were brought to the Vologda region as an experiment in 1991. During 13 years, the herd has increased significantly and moved 22 kilometers.

Now 53 wisents live in the forests of Ust- Cuban region. They are free to move, but they can be seen only near special feeding sites. There are three such areas in the region. The wisents are afraid of people but have become accustomed to the buses with passengers and it will allow driving visitors close to the animals.
