Until then, November 7 had been celebrated as the day of the Great October Socialist Revolution which was effected by the Bolsheviks and which split Russian society into the ”red and the white” for 70 years.

The Whig & The Aristocrat: the Unlikely Friendship Between the 6th Duke of Devonshire and Tsar Nicolas I. This friendship began during the first visit of Nicholas as Grand Duke to England in 1816. This talk will deal with the main events in the friendship of two persons with very different political views, which nevertheless continued throughout their lives. As an exhibitioner in Modern Languages at Cambridge in 1945 Ian Roberts specialised in Russian and German, and then Slavonic Studies including Czech and Serbo-Croat. Joined the Foreign Office in 1951, with postings in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Rwanda and Burundi, Argentina and Norway. Retired in 1984. Thursday 20 November 2008 – 7.00 pm. Register here

Cold War Modern: Design 1945-1970. The first exhibition to examine contemporary design, architecture, film and popular culture on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the cold war era will bring together over 300 exhibits - from a Sputnik and an Apollo Mission space suit to films by Stanley Kubrick, paintings by Robert Rauschenberg and Gerhard Richter, fashion by Paco Rabanne, designs by Charles and Ray Eames and Dieter Rams, architecture by Le Corbusier, Richard Buckminster Fuller and Archigram, and vehicles including a Messerschmidt micro-car. The exhibition will start in the immediate post-war period showing differing visions for rebuilding devastated cities and competing ideas of modern life including new industrial products and building methods from the West, socialist realist art and architecture from the USSR, and the rival architectural visions in East and West Berlin. 25 September to 11 January 2009. End of the road for Soviet elite's must-have car. Sleek, low-slung and preferably black, it was once an object of desire for every Soviet bureaucrat. Now, more than half a century after it was first produced, Russia is stopping production of the legendary Volga saloon. The first Volga, launched in 1956, was based on the Ford Crestline. Mass production began two years later. KGB operatives used high-powered versions of the car, with estate models later used as ambulances. Critics say the Volga handles like a boat, befitting of its name. Once a symbol of stylish living and the preferred car of mid-level apparatchiki, the Volga has struggled to compete with the inomarki - foreign cars - that have flooded the automobile market since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
