Dear Traveller,
It's time to start thinking about St Petersburg's White Nights festival
The clocks have gone forward and spring has finally sprung, leaving us looking forward to summer. Here at Go Russia, that means one thing - it's time to start thinking about St Petersburg's White Nights festival.
St Petersburg isn't alone in experiencing the phenomenon that is the "White Nights" - those long hours of daylight that stretch into late evening that are the summer blessing of every northern latitude destination. But given that St Petersburg is such a special place, what can be better than a trip there for Beliye Nochi?
As you would expect from the most northerly city with a population over 1 million people, there's plenty to fill the hours when the sun never slips below the horizon. The revelry begins in May, reaching its peak from mid June to July. By day, the city's inhabitants throng outside, making the most of the heat and the sight of the city's 101 islands bathed in glorious sunlight.
By night, there's a tempting programme of festivals, concerts and other events to ensure locals and visitors alike get the best from this, the most cultural of Russia's cities. From opera to ballet, rock concerts to carnivals, there's plenty to delight. The oldest and most popular event is the Scarlet Sails, celebrated for decades as a tribute to Alexander Grin's famous 1922 tale.
It's one of our most favourite times to be in St Petersburg, eating an ice cream or sitting on the banks of the River Neva. We're not alone, which is why if you're planning to come and join us, we'd recommend you book now to avoid disappointment. Hotels fill up and tickets sell out, so if you'd like to experience the White Nights for yourself, why not give us a call?
The White Nights Festival runs from 27 May 2016 to 2 August 2016.
