The following is a list of items you should consider including in your first-aid kit.
Consult your pharmacist for various brands available.
Essentials
- Adhesive tape.
- Bandages and safety pins.
- Elasticised support bandages – for knees, ankles etc.
- Gauze swabs.
- Non-adhesive dressings.
- Paper stitches.
- Scissors (small).
- Sterile alcohol wipes.
- Plasters (band-aids, blister plasters).
- Sutures.
- Thermometer (note that mercury thermometers are prohibited by airlines).
- Tweezers.
Medications
- Diarrhoea and Nausea medication.
- Antifungal cream or powder – for fungal skin infections and thrush.
- Antihistamines – for allergies, e.g., hay fever; insect bites or stings, motion sickness.
- Antiseptic (such as povidone-iodine) – for cuts and grazes.
- Cold and flu tablets, throat lozenges and nasal decongestants.
- Painkillers (e.g. aspirin or paracetamol).
Miscellaneous
- Calamine lotion, sting relief or Aloe Vera – to ease irritation from sunburn and insect bites or stings.
- Eye drops.
- Re-hydration mixture – to prevent dehydration, due to severe diarrhoea.
- Your own personal medications and prescriptions.
