Built in 1824, the Bolshoi Theatre has witnessed many disasters, including the fire of 1853 and bombing during World War II. In order to accommodate the meetings and political gatherings of the Soviet leaders the theatre was also modified and damaged over time and not restored to its former glory.
For over six years the Bolshoi troupe have performed in the New Bolshoi Theatre that is located next to the original Theatre building. The recent renovation of the original Bolshoi Theatre has been the most extensive and the most expensive in the Theatre’s history.
The Bolshoi Theatre, the crown jewel of the Russian arts, is scheduled to reopen on the 28th October 2011. The opening night gala concert will be attended by Russian president, Dmitri Medvedev.
One of the first premier ballet performances to be shown on the newly rebuilt stage of the Bolshoi Theater is “Sleeping Beauty” on the 18th November 2011.
