Named after the New York chef who runs it, the restaurant caters to expats and adventurous Russians. The food is generally grilled or braised instead of fried or boiled as in Russian cuisine, but heavier dishes also make an appearance (for example, the house-made foie gras). Highlights include American Expresser salad, eggplant-and-mushroom pizza and carrot cake. The simple stone-and-wood hall is small and the kitchen is partly visible, giving the place an intimacy and casualness many Russian restaurants lack. Since reservations are not taken, avoid rush hours (14.00 and 19.00-21.00) if you don't want to wait. Korea’s opens early for breakfast, too - a rarity here. There's not much to see nearby, but Tverskaya Street and the zoo are not too far away.

An expensive restaurant that trades on Louisiana’s history as a cultural melting pot by serving American, Mexican and French influenced food. An extensive menu will make it hard to choose. Their Mexican section is filled with tasty options which can be spiced up to your preference. Most of their meat comes from New Zealand, Australia and Argentina and is sent directly without refrigeration. They also stock Russian beef for those on a budget. Perhaps the best steaks you will taste in Moscow, but you have to pay a packet for them. The Louisiana Steak House has tacky decor but a fairly lively atmosphere. The indoor seating area is quite small so it is a good idea to book a table. This is a great place to go in the summer months when the courtyard is open and their barbecue is in operation.

Open 24 hours, these two diners are identical to those back in the United States - same brightly lighted 1950s design, large portions, and great value for the price. In Moscow these spots are popular options for late workers, exhausted early morning party-goers, and old friends getting together for a weekend brunch. It's always full of boisterous first-timers to Russia and expats looking for a taste of home. The Mayakovskaya locale is busier because of its centre-city location and its secluded summertime patio. Waiters are young and friendly, speak English, and serve fast.

One of the original American bars and Moscow restaurants, the Bar and Grill goes for the Wild West look that is especially popular with anyone who has never been to the United States. Buffalo heads hang on walls beside leather saddles and old American road signs. The only really genuine American thing is the huge portions. Open 24 hours, the bar always seems to be busy with clients feeding on its popular chicken wings or downing numerous margaritas. Although the Mayakovsky branch is more popular, the newer, bigger Taganskaya restaurant has pool rooms, a larger summer garden, and bands regularly rocking its main room.

A very fun restaurant just a block from the Kremlin. It can get a bit crowded and noisy in the front room (especially on the weekends). There's also live music played here from time to time. But if you want some place a little more cosy and intimate, ask for a table in the back room. It can provide a good atmosphere for quiet dining and conversation. The food here is surprisingly good and the menu is fairly extensive with plenty of items to please any taste, including a number of purely vegetarian dishes. You can get margaritas in a wide assortment of flavours and a traditional one can certainly hit the spot.

El Gaucho is not just a restaurant! It is a corner of far-away sunny and mysterious Argentina in the central Moscow where you can feel as if you were in an original family of Argentinean gaucho, welcoming you with an enchanting tango in bright traditional costumes. Everything here is grilled - meat, vegetables and fish. El Gaucho's speciality steak is 'Angus' (marble meat of black bull). 'Chorizo', 'Asado' (steak on ribs) and 'Caballero' lamb ribs also have very interesting tastes. Tagankas are served with wooden boards to cut the served piece of meat on. Only here you can try true mate made under an ancient recipe in a vessel made of dried pumpkin - 'calabash'.

One of the most popular Moscow restaurants, this loud place offers a satisfying Mexican menu of traditional favourites for South-western palates. Among the nachos, guacamole and fajitas are several chicken dishes and a few exotic ones, such as roasted duck tacos. For a final flourish, flag down the roving compadre whose holster packs tequila bottles instead of six-shooters. The walls are covered in a bright Aztec motif, and the staff's mood matches the festive costumes. They have been known to break out in spontaneous dance while taking your order.
