Samara

Capital of the Samara region and situated on the Volga River, Samara is another Russian city that slips under the radar of many visitors to Russia.  It’s historic core brings to mind a Russian merchants’ city, for of course, that’s what it once was.  Architecturally of interest are the many monuments, memorials and statues that grace the city’s streets and squares.  Look out for the one with a cat sitting on a radiator.

Samara’s largest square, Kuibyshev, is also the largest in Europe.  That’s not the only superlative sight – the city’s train station is the tallest in Europe, with a spire topping out at 101 metres above ground level.  It’s well worth the trip to the top for the panoramic views it affords.
