St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg

The perfect foil to brash and lively Moscow, St Petersburg is as elegant and refined as they come. Built over 101 islands, you won’t be surprised to learn that this city is often nicknamed the “Venice of the North”. Now a museum, the Peter and Paul Fortress is the city’s oldest structure and was built to prevent a Swedish invasion.

The city is best known for its palaces. In particular, the Hermitage Museum, a collection of works of art housed in Peter the Great’s former Winter Palace, stands out. You’ll find every great artist represented here, from Leonardo da Vinci to the French Impressionists and everyone in between.  And on the outskirts of the city, you’ll find Petrodvorets, his Summer Palace, with its sumptuous interiors and exquisitely landscaped gardens. A visit to St Petersburg for the Confederations Cup will coincide with the city’s White Nights: its northerly latitude sees the sun set late into the night and its residents come out to play, creating a great atmosphere for visitors at this time of year.
